Introduction

Desire2Learn (D2L) is a comprehensive Learning Management system that allows you to present your course in a wholly online, blended, or enhanced environment. Effectively utilizing the D2L interface and course tools are paramount to delivering an instructionally sound, effective course.

The purpose of this wiki is to provide you with information about D2L, and assistance for common technical questions.

This page provides an overview to logging in to Desire2Learn, a link to information about using D2L as a gateway to third-party systems, and how to access the D2L Orientation course.

Working through the D2L Orientation course is the first, and required, step to becoming familiar with D2L and being able to effectively transition from Blackboard (WebCT) to Desire2Learn.You are probably already thinking about your Blackboard(WebCT) course and what you need to consider as you transition it to D2L. To help you in your transition from Blackboard to Desire2Learn, here is a checklist of items to consider as you transition your course to Desire2Learn. It will provide a guide for the modifications you may need to make in order to finish the conversion of your course from Blackboard (WebCT) to Desire2Learn.

How Much Time Will I Need to Work Through This Page and the D2L Orientation Course?

This page will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The Gateway information will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. The Faculty D2L Orientation course will require approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete.

What Do I Need To Get Started?

No prerequisite is required for you to work through the self-paced D2L Orientation course. However, in order to log in to Desire2Learn and access the D2L Orientation course, you must have a Desire2Learn ID and password.

Learning Outcomes for the Faculty D2L Orientation Course

The D2L Orientation course is designed to provide faculty with a general overview of D2L. By working through this Orientation, you will learn how to:

Work within both the Faculty role and Student role, and

Navigating in the Faculty D2L Orientation Course

To navigate through the content in the Orientation course, first click on the Let's Get Started link in the Content Browser.

Then, click on the Getting Around in the Desire2Learn Learning Environment link.

This will open up the first page of content. To continue working through each page of the Orientation course, click on the arrow in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

What If I Will Only Be Using D2L as a Gateway to a Third-Party (Publisher-Supplied) CMS?

If you are using Desire2Learn as a gateway to your third-party (publisher-supplied) CMS, click on this link for a tutorial on adding a link to that system into your Desire2Learn course shell.

Access to the Faculty D2L Orientation course

We have provided the Orientation course to allow you to explore and become familiar with the tools available in Desire2Learn. Working through the Orientation course is required before attending the Desire2Learn transition training session.

How Do I Get Access to Desire2Learn?

The primary and preferred method to access Desire2Learn is by first logging to the MyHACC portal at http://myhacc.hacc.edu. Once logged into the portal, click on Desire2Learn.

A secondary method is available by logging in via the URL http://ehacc.hacc.edu.

Where Do I Go for Help?

The following chart is provided to students but it is of value to faculty as well.

WebDAV and D2L

What is WebDAV?

WebDAV is a quick and easy way to copy, move, rename, delete, upload, and download course files directly from your computer to your D2L course. WebDAV stands for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning and it allows users to edit and work with files remotely. It's best used when attempting to upload a large number of files or when you edit and revise files frequently. Setting Up WebDAV

You'll need a couple of things before you move forward in setting up your D2L course for WebDAV.

1. Your D2L username

2. Your D2L password

3. Your D2L course WebDAV URL

4. Operating System

Getting Your D2L Course's WebDAV URL

Setting up WebDAV to your D2L course requires a specific URL. The first part of this URL is the domain for HACC's D2L WebDAV site. The HACC WebDAV URL is:

The second part of the URL is your D2L course path. Basically it is the location of all your course files and content in D2L and can be found by:

Once there we will copy the entire course path which is in the grey area of the image below.

After you copy the course path we would just add it to the end of HACC D2L WebDAV domain. The complete URL would be something like this:

Campus Pack

What is Desire2Learn (D2L)?

D2L is a comprehensive learning management system used to deliver online content, facilitiate communication, and allow for online submission of assignments and assessments in HACC courses. Faculty and students in all online and blended (combination online and face-to- face) courses will access their courses using D2L in the Spring 2012. Face-to-face instructors and their students may also use D2L as a web-enhancement in their courses.

How can I prepare to use Desire2Learn (D2L)?

Login to the myHACC portal and select Desire2Learn. Click on the Desire2Learn Student Orientation. This orientation is designed to walk you through the most common tools and features in D2L. Complete this orientation before you begin your courses to become familiar with the learning environment and the tools.

User Name: Your User Name is your HACC ID.

Password: Your password is your HACCWeb PIN.

What do I do if the MyHACC portal won't let me login?

Please call the HACC Help Desk at (717) 780-2570. If the Help Desk cannot resolve the issue or if the portal is down for any reason, please use the secondary method of accessing D2L as described next.

Can I access Desire2Learn (D2L) if the myHACC portal is not available?

Yes! Go directly to Desire2Learn at https://ehacc.hacc.edu and log in manually using your HACCid and your HACCWeb PIN.

How do I find out more about Desire2Learn's learning environment and tools?

After logging into Desire2Learn's home page, click on the Desire2Learn Help button under the area Help for Students. From the Search menu at the top of the page, type in your search topic. Or, from Desire2Learn's home page you can view the Product Help pages and the Getting Started with Learning Environment basic orientation as well as help information for the various tools.

My classes are not showing up, where are they?

Please remember that your classes will not show up in your list of courses until the first day of the class in which you are enrolled. Classes should be listed by no later than 8:00am. If that time has passed, please contact your Campus Welcome Center to verify that you are enrolled in the class that you are expecting to see.

Setting Up Cyberduck for WebDAV

This tutorial will show you how to create a WebDAV connection to your D2L course by using Cyberduck. Cyberduck is an open source file transferring software capable of handling FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Cloud Files, Google Docs, and Amazon S3. Creating a Link to a Campus Pack Object

Campus Pack is a third party product that allows faculty to create wikis, blogs, journals, and podcasts. These Campus Pack items can then be incorporated into a Desire2Learn course.

1. Login into your D2L course and click on the link in the Navigation Bar.

2. Click on New Topic and choose Quicklink.

3. Choose a module from the drop down menu and enter a title. Next, click on the Quicklink icon.

4. Under Category select External Learning Tools. Under External Learning Tools select Campus Pack Collaboration Space. Click Insert.

5. Under Content in the URL area, you should now see a path to your Campus Pack Content. Click Save.

6. You’ve just successfully added a link to a Campus Pack Object. The next step is to access the Campus Pack area to create a wiki, blog, journal, or podcast.

Uploading a Screencast-o-Matic Video

First create and save your Screencast-o-Matic video and log into the course where you’d like to upload your video.

Once you are in your course click on the link

Embedding a YouTube Video

This tutorial will show you how to embed a YouTube video into a webpage for use in a Desire2Learn course.

Once you are in your course click on the link

You’ll be taken to the Manage Content area.

Here we can either create a New Module to house our video or if we already have a module created, we could just create a New Topic.

D2L should take you to a preview window. However you might get an error message stating that the content has been blocked. Click the checkbox to always allow this video to display. The video should now be visible. Click and .

Congratulations! Your YouTube video has now been successfully embedded into your course.

The D2L Group tool is designed to allow you to create group work areas for students. After creating a group, you’ll be able to assign different projects, tasks or topics to each group.

Creating groups starts with creating the category that they’’’ be organized under.

Click on the Create Group Category.

You'll be taken to the new category page.

You'll also have to choose from one of the five enrollment options available:

Groups of #
You specify the maximum number of students per group and D2L automatically creates the appropriate number of groups

# of Groups
You specify the number of groups to be added and D2L automatically assigns an equal number of students to each group

# of Groups – No Auto Enrollments
You specify the number of groups to be added. You will later manually assign students to each group.

Groups of # - Self Enrollment
You specify the maximum number of students per group and the students enroll themselves in their desired group.

# of Groups – Self Enrollment

The Pager is an instant messaging tool that can also be used to send text messages to others in the Desire2Learn system. The recipient doesn't have to be logged into Desire2Learn to receive a text message. It will be waiting for them when they do log on.

The Pager icon is on the left-hand side of the Desire2Learn window. It looks like a text bubble from a cartoon.

Clicking on the icon opens the pager window. Select the Classlist by clicking on the icon. This displays the students in your class. It also tells you if they are online or not. If they are offline, the message will be waiting for them when they next log on.

Click on the contact's name and this will open the message box. Type in your message and click on the Send button. If the contact is offline, the message will be waiting for them when they log on to Desire2Learn.

You can also access the Pager from the ClassList tool. A green dot will appear next to the student's name if they are online. Click in the Checkbox next to the student's name and then on the Pager icon on the menu to open the Pager.

When you receive a page or text,, notice the change in the icon below:. You will also hear a beeping sound to let you know that you have received a page.

Clicking on the icon will open the Pager and you will see the message in the inbox.

You may turn off the warning sound in your preferences.

Course Builder Pt. 2

The Course Builder, Part 2:

In this tutorial, we'll look at how to add our content to the placeholders created in part one of this tutorial. If you are not at the Course Builder tool, Click on Edit Course, then click on Course Builder and finally click on Start to return to where we left off in the Course Builder tool.

To view what placeholders you have created within each module, click on the plus sign in the left-hand side of the module. This expands the view of the module to display what place holders have been created. The plus sign then changes to a minus sign.

To add the actual topic page or content to the placeholder, click on the placeholder, This displays the placeholder information on the right side of the screen. We can edit this information by clicking on Edit Placeholder.

Click on Save to apply changes made.

To add a file to the placeholder, click on the Add File. Link.

This allows you to either choose a file from your computer or one that you have already uploaded to the Manage Files area of the course. When you have chosen a file, click on Select File.

After adding the file to the placeholder, notice that the color changes to reflect the change in status from placeholder to actual file.

The summary information to the right now includes file information in addition to what was there before.

To rearrange items in the Course Builder, click on the down arrow to expand the menu and select to either moving the content up or down or to another module entirely.

Course Builder

This tutorial provides an overview of the Course Builder in Desire2Learn. It is presented in two parts.

Part 1:

When you are beginning a new course and you are presented with an empty shell, it can be difficult to decide how to organize your content. The Course Builder is a tool that you can use to help you lay out how your new course is going to look. It is a tool that can help you organize the components of the course as well as help you visualize how the course will look.

To access the Course Builder, click on the Edit Course link to open the Course Administration page.

Select Course Builder from the left-hand column.

The Course Builder offers three options when you open it. We'll concentrate on the first option, creating modules and placeholders for your course. Click on the Start button.

Here is the Course Builder canvas. To start the process, drag a Module icon to the course icon from the Toolbox window.

It will ask us for a name and we can add a description if we wish. Click on Create to save the module information.

We can continue to drag new modules over to complete this level of structure for our course. Note that we may include modules within modules if we need to do that for organizational purposes.

Once the modules are in place, we can add placeholders for various types of content, such as links, topic pages, discussion topics, homework assignments and quizzes. When you add a placeholder you will need to give it a title and possibly a description. Click on Create to add the placeholder.

Here is an image showing what content placeholders would look like in the module.

Returning to the course home page and looking at the Content Browser, we can see that the structure of the course is starting to take shape.

Links Tool

This tutorial will take a look at the Desire2Learn Links tool.

The Links tool allows you to provide a set of useful Web links for your students. To access the Links tool, you need to have it on your navigation bar. It is not there by default so you will need to add it to your custom navigation bar.

Once you have added it, click on the Links tool to open it.

The first thing you must do is create a new category.

I'm going to create a couple. The first one is to be called General Links and click on Save and New.

And I'm going to create one called Course Links.

Now that we have the categories created, we can add a link. I'm going to click on the New Link icon

And I'm going to create one for HACC's home page, and I'm going to Save it.

Now that it has been created, I'm going to return to the course home page and change our current role to that of a student so that we can take a look at what we created.

Click on the Links tool and we'll see that the HACC home page link is there. Notice that only the categories that we have added a Web link will show to the students.

Accessing Campus Pack from Your Course

First, complete the creating a link to a Campus Pack object which can be found here:

Once you’ve created a link to the Campus Pack object click back on the link.
Under Manage Content select the Campus Pack link (this example I used the Collaboration Space).

Three Types of Campus Pack Links in Desire2Learn

Campus Pack Content

Choosing Campus Pack Content allows you to add to your course any of the Campus Pack tools such as a Blog, Discussion Board, Journal, Podcast and Wiki. You can also choose to use premade templates, add a shortcut to or copy existing content and upload a Campus Pack archive. When you chose to add new content, Campus Pack will create it on-demand, upon first access. The integration with D2L does not pick up the name of the item you added, so you will have to add it again.

Campus Pack Personal
Campus Pack Personal Space links to each user's personal learning space,which is separate from any course. From there, each user can create their own content and share it with others inside and outside of HACC as sort of ePortfolio.

Campus Pack Collaboration Space

Campus Pack Collaboration Space links to the collaborate space for the current course. In that space, the instructor can create Campus Pack content. Students can see all Campus Pack content used in the course and with the proper permission settings be allowed to create content inside the collaboration space.

Manage Files/LOR

This tutorial provides an overview of how to manage files in Desire2Learn.

Let's look at where your files are stored in Desire2Learn. The Manage Files area is the place in Desire2Learn where your files are stored. You can access it by clicking on the Edit Course Link to open the Course Administration page.

On the right-hand column under the tools section click on the Manage Files link.

This opens the Manage Files area.

The Manage Files area can also be accessed through the Content link as the Manage Files link is also contained in the left-hand Content Areas menu.

You may create few files, new folders, upload files, delete files as well as other file management tasks.

To create a folder, click on the New Folder link.

Provide a name for the folder and then click on Save.

To upload files into the folder, click on the folder to open it. Then click on the Upload link.

This opens the Upload file dialog box. Click on Browse to navigate to your hard drive to select the file to upload. You may upload more then one file at a time by clicking on the Add button. This opens a new file to upload entry box. When finished, click on the Upload button.

The file has been uploaded into the Manage Files area.

To copy a file into a folder, select the file and click on the copy icon.

Navigate to your destination, and click on the Paste button. Notice that it tells you that you have one file to be copied.

The file has now been copied into its new location.

Manage Files Area

Content Creating & Organizing

The following tutorials provide instruction on how work with Desire2Learns Learning Modules. The tutorials describe how to create modules and add topics (content) as well as giving an overview of the Desire2Learn file manger.

To add content to our class, click on the content link on your navigation bar at the top of the page.

This will take you to the Manage Content page and display your learning modules and the content associated with them.

To add new content, we would simply come to the top of the screen and click on New Topic.

When we click on New Topic we are given some options. We could create a new file using D2L's HTML editor, or we can bring a file in from an existing file already in the course, or we could upload a new file or we can link to course material or a page that is on the Internet.

Select the module where you want the file to be located.

Provide a title for the content page.

Click on the Browse button to navigate your hard drive to find the file you wish to upload.

Select the file and click on OPEN.

Click on Choose Destination to designate where in Manage Files the file will be stored.

Navigate through your folder structure and click on the appropriate folder to selec tit and then click on Select a Path.

Then click on the Save button.

The topic has been added.

Complex Rubrics

There are time we need a grading rubric where different criteria in the rubric have different point values. In this tutorial we will look at how to create a rubric that meets those needs.

The rubrics tool can be accessed in several ways, it can be accessed through an assessment tool, clicking on "Create Rubric in New Window" link

or if you have added the Rubric tool to the course navigation bar, you my click on it there.

Either will open the rubric tool. Enter a name for the rubric, the number of levels and criteria and select the type of rubric, letter grade, points or custom. We will look at a points based rubric. Click on the Save button to save your choices.

Click on the Levels and Criteria tab to create your rubric.

Here is the basic rubric shell we just created.

To create a set of criteria with a different set of point values, click on Add Criteria Group.

This will open up the Add Criteria Group page. Provide a name for the group, enter the number of criteria and levels and then click on Save to continue.

Enter descriptions for the levels and criteria and adjust the point values as desired. When finished, click on Save.

If you need to add more criteria levels, repeat the process. Add the criteria level descriptions by clicking on the drop down arrows after the criteria description as in a simple rubric.
